Countries where individuals pay no tax on crypto gains, fully or after a holding period
Crypto tax-free countries, one by one
1. United Arab Emirates
With no personal income tax, individuals in the UAE pay no tax on gains from crypto held as a personal investment. Source: taxsummaries.pwc.com, checked September 29, 2026. PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries, last reviewed September 9, 2026
Under the United Arab Emirates' tax rules, foreign income is untaxed for new residents, and 90 days Source: tax.gov.ae, checked September 29, 2026. 90 days in 12 consecutive months with a residence permit plus a permanent home or UAE business (Federal Tax Authority's unofficial translation of Cabinet Decision No. 85 of 2022) in the country make you tax resident. The UAE has no personal income tax, and a self-employed person pays no corporate tax while business turnover stays at or below AED 1,000,000 (about $272,000) a year.
Personal investment income never counts as business turnover in the UAE, so even very large crypto gains stay outside the corporate tax that starts at AED 1,000,000 (about $272,000) of turnover.
2. Mauritius
Mauritius has no capital gains tax, so crypto held as a personal investment is untaxed. Source: taxsummaries.pwc.com, checked September 29, 2026
Under Mauritius's tax rules, foreign income is taxed only when it is brought into the country, and 183 days Source: mra.mu, checked September 29, 2026. Income Tax Act section 73(1)(a)(ii); the 270-day, 3-year test allows about 90 days a year once established in the country make you tax resident. On the Premium Visa, pay for remote work done from Mauritius is taxed only when remitted to Mauritius, and spending with a foreign card does not count, so earnings kept abroad pay 0%.
On the Premium Visa, earnings kept outside the country are untaxed too, so a nomad's pay and a personal coin portfolio can both sit outside Mauritian tax.
3. Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands impose no income tax on individuals, so crypto gains are untaxed. Source: taxsummaries.pwc.com, checked September 29, 2026. PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries, last reviewed May 29, 2026
Under the Cayman Islands' tax rules, foreign income is untaxed for new residents, and there is no income tax residence test to pass. The Cayman Islands tax no individual income at all, but the remote worker program closed to new applicants in 2022, so residence now takes a Cayman business, a local job or an investment of KYD 1,000,000 (about $1,200,000).
With no income tax of any kind, Cayman draws no line between holding and trading, so an active trader gets the same 0% as a long-term holder.
4. The Bahamas
The Bahamas has no personal income tax, so individuals pay no tax on crypto gains. Source: taxsummaries.pwc.com, checked September 29, 2026. PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries, last reviewed July 21, 2026
Under the Bahamas' tax rules, foreign income is untaxed for new residents, and there is no income tax residence test to pass. The Bahamas has no personal income tax, so a self-employed resident pays only National Insurance of 10.3% on profit up to BSD 43,160 (about $43,160) a year.
No holding period applies, so coins sold a week after purchase are as untaxed as coins held for years.
5. Monaco
Monaco residents who are not French nationals pay no income tax, so they pay no tax on crypto gains; French nationals living in Monaco are taxed under the 1963 France-Monaco convention. Source: monservicepublic.gouv.mc, checked September 29, 2026
Under Monaco's tax rules, foreign income is untaxed for new residents, and 91 days Source: monservicepublic.gouv.mc, checked September 29, 2026. The residence permit is for people who reside in Monaco more than 3 months a year (page updated September 25, 2026). The tax residence certificate then needs more than 183 days, or a principal place of business in Monaco, or the majority of the year in Monaco (certificate page updated December 23, 2024). 91 days is the permit floor; the principal place of business test sets no day count in the country make you tax resident. Monaco has no personal income tax for residents who are not French, and a freelancer selling advisory or expert services abroad runs a civil activity outside the 25% profit tax, so the only charge is fixed social contributions of about €6,604 (about $7,510) a year, about 9% of profit at $100,000 of revenue.
Trading as a business is another matter: a commercial business run from Monaco with at least 25% of its turnover from outside Monaco pays the 25% profit tax.
6. Singapore
Singapore treats gains from buying and selling digital tokens as personal investment gains, which are generally not taxed. Source: iras.gov.sg, checked September 29, 2026. Trading as a business is taxed as income
Under Singapore's tax rules, foreign income is untaxed for new residents, and 183 days Source: iras.gov.sg, checked September 29, 2026 in the country make you tax resident. Singapore taxes a resident's trade income at 0% to 24% and leaves foreign income untaxed, but it has no visa for freelancers: the main route for a remote worker needs a salary of SGD 30,000 (about $23,500) a month.
IRAS lists digital tokens among instruments whose gains are generally personal investment, so a holder pays nothing, while a token business run from Singapore is taxed as trade income.
7. Malaysia
Malaysia taxes an individual's capital gains only on real property, so crypto held as a personal investment is generally untaxed. Source: taxsummaries.pwc.com, checked September 29, 2026
Under Malaysia's tax rules, foreign income is untaxed for new residents, and 182 days Source: mdec.my, checked September 29, 2026. MDEC FAQ: after 182 days a DE Rantau holder is resident under section 7 of the Income Tax Act 1967. PwC (last reviewed June 16, 2026) gives the same 182 days in the country make you tax resident. A foreign freelancer working from Malaysia for foreign clients is taxed there at resident rates of 0% to 30% after 182 days, while foreign income a resident brings in is exempt until December 31, 2036.
The bigger draw is foreign income: what a resident brings into Malaysia is exempt until December 31, 2036, so gains made abroad can come home untaxed.
8. Hong Kong
Hong Kong does not tax capital gains of individuals, so crypto held as a personal investment is untaxed. Source: taxsummaries.pwc.com, checked September 28, 2026. Gains from trading as a business are profits-taxable
Under Hong Kong's tax rules, foreign income is untaxed for new residents, and 181 days Source: ird.gov.hk, checked September 29, 2026. More than 180 days in the year of assessment (April 1 to March 31), or more than 300 days over 2 years in the country make you tax resident. A sole trader in Hong Kong pays 7.5% profits tax on the first HKD 2,000,000 (about $255,000) of profit from work done there, plus up to HKD 18,000 (about $2,290) a year of MPF, and nothing on profits arising abroad, dividends or capital gains.
Crypto held as an investment is untaxed, but profit from trading tokens as a business in Hong Kong falls under profits tax like any other trade.
9. Malta
Malta's revenue guidelines put gains on coins held as capital assets outside capital gains tax, while coins held as trading stock are taxed as income. Source: ccmalta.com, checked September 29, 2026
Under Malta's tax rules, foreign income is taxed only when it is brought into the country, and 183 days Source: taxsummaries.pwc.com, checked September 29, 2026. The Nomad Residence Permit 10% rule does not depend on tax residence in the country make you tax resident. A freelancer on Malta's Nomad Residence Permit pays 0% on remote-work income for the first 12 months, then a flat 10% on net income for up to 4 years, plus Class 2 social security capped at €4,362 (about $4,960) a year: 15.8% of profit at $100,000 of revenue.
Plan around the distinction: a long-term holder is outside the tax, while coins that look like trading stock are taxed at progressive income tax rates.
10. Switzerland
Switzerland normally exempts private capital gains on movable assets, so gains on crypto held as a private investment are untaxed. Source: taxsummaries.pwc.com, checked September 29, 2026
Under Switzerland's tax rules, foreign income is taxed, and 30 days Source: fedlex.admin.ch, checked September 29, 2026. 30 days with gainful activity, 90 days without. A tax domicile starts on moving in, with no day count in the country make you tax resident. A self-employed person living in a low-tax commune such as Wollerau pays federal, cantonal and communal income tax plus 10% old-age and disability contributions, about 16% of profit at $100,000 of revenue, but non-EU freelancers rarely get a residence permit.
The exemption ends where professional dealing begins, so a holder who trades like a securities dealer is taxed, and Swiss residence permits are hard for non-EU freelancers to get.
11. Georgia
Georgia exempts gains on assets held more than 2 years and not used in a business, and gains without a Georgian source. Source: matsne.gov.ge, checked September 29, 2026
Under Georgia's tax rules, foreign income is untaxed for new residents, and 183 days Source: matsne.gov.ge, checked September 29, 2026. Tax Code Article 34(2) in the country make you tax resident. Georgia taxes work done in the country but not foreign income: an individual entrepreneur in an eligible activity pays 1% of turnover up to GEL 500,000 (about $192,000) a year, and foreign dividends and gains are tax-free.
The Tax Code does not name crypto-assets for income tax, so the general rules apply: coins held more than 2 years outside a business, or sold without a Georgian source, are exempt.
12. Croatia
Croatia exempts gains on crypto held for more than 2 years; earlier disposals pay capital gains tax. Source: zakon.hr, checked September 29, 2026
Under Croatia's tax rules, foreign income is partly exempt for new residents, and 183 days Source: porezna-uprava.gov.hr, checked September 29, 2026. General Tax Act art. 43 (zakon.hr consolidated text to NN 105/26, read September 29, 2026): domicile (prebivaliste) is where the person owns or has at their disposal a home continuously for at least 183 days in one or two calendar years, and living in it is not required; habitual residence (uobicajeno boraviste) is a stay of at least 183 days in one or two calendar years. The Tax Administration page states the same domicile rule, including that living in the home is not required. A home at one's disposal can make a person resident with few days of presence in the country make you tax resident. A non-EU remote worker on Croatia's digital nomad permit pays 0% income tax on pay from an employer or own company registered abroad, for a stay of up to 18 months, with no compulsory Croatian health or pension contributions.
Sell after 2 years and the gain is untaxed, and for a remote worker the bigger pull is the 0% digital nomad permit on foreign pay.
13. Czechia
Czechia exempts income from selling crypto held more than 3 years, up to CZK 40,000,000 (about $1.87 million) of sale proceeds a year, and exempts a year's crypto sales at any holding period when they total CZK 100,000 (about $4,660) or less; crypto held as a business asset does not qualify. Source: zakonyprolidi.cz, checked September 29, 2026. Added by Act 32/2025 Coll., in force from February 15, 2025. Neither exemption covers crypto that is or was a business asset, until 3 years after the self-employed activity ends
Under Czechia's tax rules, foreign income is taxed, and 183 days Source: zakonyprolidi.cz, checked September 29, 2026. A permanent home in Czechia makes a person resident with fewer days in the country make you tax resident. A freelancer in Czechia can pay one fixed monthly amount of CZK 9,162 (about $427) covering income tax, pension and health insurance on revenue up to CZK 1.5 million (about $70,000); above the CZK 2 million (about $93,300) limit the 60% flat expense allowance keeps tax and insurance near 18% of profit at $100,000 of revenue.
Keep the coins apart from any business: crypto that is or was a business asset qualifies for neither exemption until 3 years after the self-employed activity ends, and the CZK 40,000,000 (about $1.87 million) cap counts sale proceeds, not gains.
14. Portugal
Portugal excludes gains on crypto-assets held for 365 days or more from income tax. Source: info.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt, checked September 29, 2026
Under Portugal's tax rules, foreign income is taxed, and 183 days Source: info.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt, checked September 29, 2026. The law says more than 183 days. The home test can make a person resident with fewer days in the country make you tax resident. A freelancer who moves to Portugal pays progressive income tax of 12.5% to 48% on 75% of revenue plus 21.4% social security on 70% of revenue, about 43% of profit at $100,000 of revenue.
Hold for 365 days and the gain is excluded; sell sooner and it is taxed, so the purchase date of every coin matters more here than anywhere else on the list.
No tax, or no tax after a holding period: the 2 rules on this list
Most countries here leave crypto gains untaxed because they tax no capital gains of individuals at all. Portugal works differently: it taxes gains on shares, but it excludes from income tax the gains on crypto-assets held for 365 days or more. Czechia has a longer wait: since February 15, 2025, it has exempted crypto held more than 3 years, up to CZK 40,000,000 (about $1.87 million) of sale proceeds a year.
Outside the Cayman Islands and The Bahamas, which have no income tax at all, and the UAE, where a natural person's trading business enters corporate tax only once its turnover passes AED 1,000,000 (about $272,000), the exemption is for holding, not dealing. Singapore counts the buying and selling of digital tokens as personal investment that is generally not taxable, and Malta's revenue guidelines put coins held as capital assets outside capital gains tax while coins held as trading stock in a business are taxed as ordinary income.
Holder or trader: the same token profit, taxed 2 ways
Untaxed
You bought BTC and ETH in 2023, held through 2025 and sell once in 2026 to buy a home. In the UAE, Singapore or Malta that is a personal investment gain, and in Portugal it is excluded because every coin was held more than 365 days.
Taxed
You trade tokens daily from a Lisbon apartment or a Valletta office and live on the profits. Portugal taxes every coin sold within 365 days of purchase, and Malta can treat the coins as trading stock and tax the profit as income.
Paid in crypto: income, not a tax-free gain
A crypto exemption covers the gain when you sell. Tokens you receive as pay for your work are pay, taxed wherever that work is taxed and at the country's ordinary income tax rates, which run from 0% in the UAE and the Cayman Islands to 48% at the top of Portugal's brackets. Singapore and Hong Kong tax work done in the country, whatever currency the client pays in.
Leaving your old country with crypto gains
The new country's 0% does nothing about the country you leave, and crypto gets no special treatment there:
- US citizens stay taxable on worldwide income wherever they live, and the IRS treats digital assets as property, not currency, so a sale in Dubai is taxed in the US like a sale of other property.
- UK leavers owe Capital Gains Tax on crypto disposals, including swaps for another token and paying for goods, and a UK leaver who returns within 5 years pays UK tax on gains made while away on coins owned before leaving.
- Anyone still resident at home on the sale date is taxed there, whatever the new country charges, so the order is: become resident in the new country, stop being resident in the old one, then sell.
Your exchange reports your trades
Under the EU's DAC8 rules, crypto-asset service providers collect data on the transactions of every EU-resident user from January 1, 2026, and tax authorities exchange the first year's reports by September 30, 2027. US brokers report digital asset sale proceeds on Form 1099-DA for transactions from January 1, 2025. A sale made while your old country still counts you as resident reaches its tax authority.
Before you sell crypto as a new resident
- Hold the permit and pass the new country's day test before the first sale.
- Get the tax residence certificate: the UAE and Hong Kong issue them to individuals who meet their tests.
- Record the purchase date and cost of every coin, since Portugal's 365 days count from each purchase.
- Keep holding and dealing apart: a long-term wallet you rarely touch, and any trading business in a company.
- Read the exit rule of the country you are leaving before the move, not after the sale.
Crypto businesses and freelancers: company tax and income tax still apply
A trading desk, a token project or a crypto consultancy earns business profit, not a personal gain, so it compares countries on corporate tax on company profit. A one-person company in the UAE or Hong Kong pays 0% on $100,000 of profit paid out to a non-resident owner, and one in Malta 5%.
For a freelancer who holds crypto on the side, the yearly bill on the work outweighs the crypto rule. Portugal's 0% on long-held coins sits beside a tax of more than 35% on a freelancer's $100,000 of revenue, which keeps it off the low tax countries, while the UAE and the Cayman Islands charge 0% on both.
How this list is ranked
A country qualifies when a resident individual pays no tax on crypto gains, either at all or after a holding period, and the rule is confirmed in the statute, at the tax authority or in a Big 4 or law firm summary. No-tax countries come first, then holding-period countries.
Within each group, countries follow their Nomad Tax Index score: the tax a self-employed remote worker pays at $100,000 of revenue, how foreign dividends, interest and gains are taxed, how easy the country is to get into, the days you must spend there and recent stability.
David's note
I would keep long-term coins and any trading in separate hands. A wallet you rarely touch is the easiest thing to defend as an investment; once the same wallet funds daily trades, every country on this list except the Cayman Islands and The Bahamas has grounds to treat the profit as income.
