The Cayman Islands tax no individual income: no income tax, no capital gains tax, no payroll tax and no tax residence test. The zero is the easy part. The remote worker program has closed, working there needs a permit, and your old country keeps taxing you until you leave it properly. Here is what you still pay, who can move, how to leave home cleanly, and where your own company fits.

Quick summary

  • The Cayman Islands charge 0% income tax, 0% capital gains tax and no payroll or social security tax on individuals, on local and foreign income alike.
  • There is no tax residence test, so no Cayman day count applies; the days that matter are the ones your old country counts.
  • The Global Citizen Concierge Program for remote workers took its last applications on October 31, 2022 and expired on November 30, 2024.
  • Without a Cayman job or company, residence takes the independent means certificate: KYD 1,000,000 (about $1,200,000) invested and KYD 120,000 (about $144,000) of yearly income on Grand Cayman.
  • Anyone working in Cayman pays into a pension account: 10% of earnings up to KYD 87,000 (about $104,000), split 5% and 5% for employees.
  • Most goods pay 22% import duty, and US citizens still owe US tax with no treaty and no totalization agreement.

Structure used: No income, payroll or social security tax on individuals: 0% on self-employment profit for anyone lawfully resident. Residence without an investment needs a Cayman business (for example a Special Economic Zone company) or a local job. Bands are the effective tax on profit for a remote worker using this structure, with clients abroad and costs of 15% of revenue.

Cayman Islands tax residency: no test and no day count

The Cayman Islands levy no income tax, capital gains tax or withholding tax on individuals, so there is no income tax residence test to pass or fail. Spend 30 days or 365 on Grand Cayman and the Cayman result is the same: nothing is due on salary, freelance fees, dividends, interest or gains, whether the money comes from inside Cayman or from abroad.

That puts Cayman among the few countries with no personal income tax at all, and it has no payroll or social security tax on individuals either. What it does have is a tight immigration system. Living there takes a residence certificate or a permit, and working there takes a work permit, a Special Economic Zone permit or a certificate that allows it. The certificate for persons of independent means, the route for movers without a local job or company, does not allow local employment.

With no tax residence to acquire, Cayman residence also proves less than people expect. It gives you a lawful home, not a tax status your old country has to respect, so the test that decides whether you have left is always your old country's own.

The independent means certificate: what it takes

On Grand Cayman the certificate needs KYD 1,000,000 (about $1,200,000) invested, with at least KYD 500,000 (about $600,000) of it in developed real estate. You also show KYD 120,000 (about $144,000) of yearly income, or hold a KYD 400,000 (about $480,000) local deposit instead.

On Cayman Brac and Little Cayman the investment drops to KYD 500,000 (about $600,000), with KYD 250,000 (about $300,000) in real estate, and the income bar to KYD 75,000 (about $90,000). The certificate runs for 25 years and is renewable, with fees of KYD 500 (about $600) on filing and KYD 20,000 (about $24,000) on grant, plus stamp duty on the property you buy.

What you still pay in the Cayman Islands

No income tax does not mean no cost. The government raises its revenue at the border and through fees, and 2 charges reach almost every resident: import duty on goods and pension contributions on earnings.

The duty rate comes from the first schedule of the Customs Tariff Act (2026 Revision), which charges 22% on shirts, office chairs and bedroom furniture alike. The same Act's second schedule is the relief a new resident should plan around: someone moving to Cayman for more than 12 months can bring household effects and tools of their trade free of duty, as long as they owned and used them abroad for at least 6 months and ship them within 6 months of arriving. A $30,000 container of furniture bought new after you land costs about $6,600 more in duty than the same furniture shipped under that relief.

Pension contributions if you work in Cayman

Pension saving is compulsory for anyone earning in Cayman. Under section 47 of the National Pensions Act (2024 Revision), an employee pays up to 5% of earnings and the employer at least 5%, and a self-employed person pays 10% of earnings, all up to the year's maximum pensionable earnings of KYD 87,000 (about $104,000). Section 25 lets employers skip contributions for non-Caymanian workers in their first 9 months of continuous work.

The money goes into a pension account in your name, not to the government. Unlike National Insurance in the Bahamas, which funds a state scheme, it stays yours. A self-employed designer earning KYD 83,300 (about $100,000) pays about KYD 8,300 (about $9,960) a year into it. Above KYD 87,000 (about $104,000) of earnings, the contribution stops growing at KYD 8,700 (about $10,400).

Moving to the Cayman Islands: the order that keeps the zero

Your Cayman move, step by step

  • Secure the right to live and work first: a work permit through a Cayman employer, a Special Economic Zone permit through your company, or the certificate for persons of independent means.
  • Plan your exit from your old country's tax system and count days under its rules, not Cayman's; for a UK leaver that means fewer than 16 days in the UK in the tax year, or fewer than 91 with full-time work abroad.
  • Ship the household effects you have owned and used for at least 6 months within 6 months of arriving, so they enter free of the 22% duty.
  • If you work for yourself in Cayman, join an approved pension plan or open an individual pension account, and pay 10% of earnings up to KYD 87,000 (about $104,000) a year.
  • Keep proof of the move: the permit or certificate, a Cayman lease, the sale or letting of your old home, and flight records showing where you spent each day.

Running your own company from the Cayman Islands

Your company gets the same zero as you. Corporate income, capital gains and payroll taxes are not imposed on corporations in Cayman, the dividends it pays you are not taxed, and with no income tax there are no controlled foreign company rules for individuals, so a company you own in another country is not looked through either.

The usual vehicle for an online business is an exempted company, which the General Registry describes as the form for activities carried out mainly outside Cayman. Section 174 of the Companies Act (2026 Revision) bars an exempted company from trading in the Islands with anyone, except in furtherance of its business outside them, unless it holds a license to do business locally. It can still sign contracts and run its affairs from Cayman.

A Cayman exempted company: the use that works and the one that breaks section 174

Works

Your exempted company sells software subscriptions to customers in the US and Europe, signs its contracts and banks in Cayman, and never invoices a Cayman customer. That is business carried on outside the Islands, and the profit reaches you untaxed.

Fails

A restaurant on Grand Cayman asks your company to build its booking site for $15,000 and you take the job. That is trading in the Islands without a license: under section 176 each responsible director commits an offense with a fine of KYD 100 (about $120) for every day it continues, and the company can be dissolved and struck off.

The company does not give you the right to live in Cayman. Founders who want to run the business from Grand Cayman do it through a company in a Special Economic Zone, whose permit lets them live and work there, or through a local job. And the zero only holds once you have really left home: while you remain tax resident in your old country, it can treat a company you manage from your laptop as resident where you sit, or tax you on its profits under its own controlled foreign company rules.

David's note

I would not pick Cayman as a freelancer who needs the island to be cheap or the paperwork to be light. The tax is zero, but the way in is a job, a Special Economic Zone company or an investment of KYD 1,000,000 (about $1,200,000), and the bill that replaces tax is rent, duty and permit fees. For a founder whose company already earns well outside Cayman, it is one of the cleanest zeros there is.

US citizens living in the Cayman Islands

Cayman's zero does not reach your US return. The Cayman Islands are not on the IRS list of income tax treaty countries or among the 31 countries with a US totalization agreement, and with no Cayman tax paid there is no foreign tax credit to claim. You can exclude up to $132,900 of 2026 earnings under the foreign earned income exclusion, and everything above that is taxed at US rates. Self-employed, you also owe 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit, about $14,130 on $100,000, which the exclusion does not reduce, and Cayman's pension contribution comes on top.

The costliest Cayman mistake: staying tax resident at home

A Cayman address does not end your old country's claim

Moving to Cayman does not end your old tax residence on its own, because Cayman gives you no tax residence to move it to. Keep a home, family or work in your old country and keep going back, and its rules can still make you resident there. Then all your income, Cayman earnings included, is taxed at its full rates, with no Cayman tax to credit against the bill.

The UK shows how little it takes. Under the statutory residence test, someone who was UK resident in any of the previous 3 tax years is automatically non-resident only with fewer than 16 days in the UK in the tax year, or fewer than 91 days while working full time abroad with under 31 days of UK work. Between 91 and 120 days in the UK, just 2 ties, such as a spouse living in the UK and a home you stay in, make you UK resident for the whole year.

Your Cayman bank account reaches your old country too. The Cayman Islands exchange financial account information with other tax authorities every year under the Common Reporting Standard, so an account opened on Grand Cayman by someone still resident at home is reported to that home country.

Who the Cayman Islands suits, and who it does not

Good fit

  • Wealthy individuals who can invest KYD 1,000,000 (about $1.2 million) and show KYD 120,000 (about $144,000) a year of income, and want no income tax in a British Overseas Territory.
  • Founders willing to set up a company in a Special Economic Zone and work from Cayman under its permit.

Poor fit

  • Remote workers and freelancers without a local job or large capital: the remote worker program is closed.
  • Cost-sensitive people: living costs and import duties are high.

Frequently asked questions

Do expats pay income tax in the Cayman Islands?

No. The Cayman Islands levy no income tax, capital gains tax or withholding tax on individuals, so salary, freelance fees, dividends and gains are untaxed whether they come from Cayman or abroad. Expats who work there do pay into a pension account, and everyone pays import duty on most goods.

How many days do I need to spend in the Cayman Islands to be tax resident?

None, because there is no income tax residence test. Days matter for 2 other things: the conditions of your permit or residence certificate, and your old country's residence rules, which decide whether it still taxes you. For a UK leaver, the safe line is fewer than 16 days in the UK in the tax year.

Can I move to the Cayman Islands as a digital nomad in 2026?

Not on a remote worker visa. The Global Citizen Concierge Program took its last applications on October 31, 2022 and expired on November 30, 2024. The routes left are a job with a Cayman employer, a company in a Special Economic Zone, or the certificate for persons of independent means, which needs KYD 1,000,000 (about $1,200,000) invested and KYD 120,000 (about $144,000) of yearly income on Grand Cayman.

Is foreign income taxed in the Cayman Islands?

No. With no income tax, foreign salary, dividends, interest, rent and capital gains are all untaxed in Cayman, whether you bring the money onto the island or leave it abroad. Your old country can still tax that income if you remain resident there.

Does the Cayman Islands have social security or payroll tax?

No payroll or social security tax is charged on individuals. Instead, the National Pensions Act makes employees and employers each pay 5% of earnings, and self-employed people 10%, up to KYD 87,000 (about $104,000) a year, into a pension account in the worker's name. Employers need not contribute for non-Caymanian workers in their first 9 months.

Is there VAT or sales tax in the Cayman Islands?

No. Import duty does that job instead: 22% on ordinary goods such as clothing and furniture under the Customs Tariff Act, which is why shop prices run high. New residents moving for more than 12 months can bring household effects they owned and used abroad for at least 6 months free of duty.

Do US citizens pay tax if they live in the Cayman Islands?

Yes. US citizens are taxed on worldwide income wherever they live, and the Cayman Islands have no income tax treaty with the US. The 2026 foreign earned income exclusion covers up to $132,900 of earnings, and self-employed Americans still owe 15.3% self-employment tax on 92.35% of net profit.

Is the Cayman Islands on the EU tax haven blacklist?

No. The Cayman Islands are not on Annex I or Annex II of the EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions as revised on October 9, 2026, and not on the FATF list of jurisdictions under increased monitoring of June 19, 2026. The zero rate is a policy choice, not a listing issue.
